Charlie & Nell
The birth of Charlie & Nell was completely organic. A solution to a problem. Back in 2018 my friend and sister in law announced their pregnancies within a few weeks of each other so I was on the hunt for baby clothes!
I soon got tired of seeing the same white, yellow and grey gender neutral baby clothes that I decided to make my own. Pairing my passion for children to be able to grow up without unconsciously conforming to gender stereotypes and my degree in Fashion Design, I started designing a capsule collection. It was important to me when designing that I included certain aspects; I wanted the garments to be adjustable so they could last as long as possible and grow with the child, the garments needed to be strong to endure the daily walking, crawling and climbing - and most importantly a vibrant colour palette to choose from!
I am aware of the fast fashion in children and baby wear as the child grows so fast and I want to play a part by keeping this brand environmentally friendly. My clothes are designed to be suitable with cloth nappies, they are designed to be a slow fashion piece; growing with the child for as long as possible, and by reinforcing seams and strengthening the garment I actively encourage for the item you choose to be passed down.
The name Charlie & Nell came from my Great Grandparents. My Grandma was the first person to introduce me to sewing when I was a child, spending hours making little Barbie skirts etc. She speaks so fondly of her parents - Charlie and Nell, I wanted the name to be a nod to her.
I hope this gives a little insight to the way my mind has worked when designing this collection!
